Art Style from an Age of Innocence Peter Driben was one of the most talented, hardest working cover artists from the golden age of Pin Ups Unfortunately for him, he apparently married the wrong woman Louise Kirby Petite Driben was a failed, Bohemian artist actress figure model, known as Crazy Aunt Louise by the rest of the family, was an advocate of many beatnik causes From 1944 46, in addition to his many magazine commissions, Driben worked as art director for New York s The Sun Newspaper and yet was too broke to attend his nephew s bar mitzvah in 46 He and his wife lived in a filthy New York apartment Although unemployed, Louise refused to dirty her hands by cleaning This book is than a collection of Driben s art work, it is a homage to the many pulp magazines in which his work appeared As long as those magazines existed, Driben often had 10 monthly commissions for covers and interior work for those publications Today, readers of this TASCHEN collection will be reminded mostly of the WW II pin ups that bomber crews had painted on their war planes That activity also disappeared with the end of the war and the pulp magazines that published pin ups on a regular basis Gone are the pulp magazines with names like La Paree, Beauty Parade, Bedtime, High Heel Magazine, Flirt, Titter, Tattle Tales, Silk Stocking Stories, Movie Humor, Modern Girl Book, Movie Fun, Movie Humor, Expose Detective, Joker, Snap, Giggles, Eyeful, Wink, Whisper, and other lesser known publications that are reproduced in this volume with Driben covers and artwork designed to tease, without being obscene After Peter s death in September 1968 Louise moved to Paris When she died there on July 17,1980, her obituary described her as a poet It s said that Louise financed her trip by selling off Driben s paintings for 10 each, 12 for 100 Even in death Poor Peter Driben couldn t earn a decent buck Poor Driben, his terrible choice in a wife, made him an unknown slave in life and death Thank goodness for TASCHEN s recognition.
